Fr. ANTHONY Carroll (1845-1904) Dear Father Reactor, | Owing to unavoidable circumstances I have been obliged to delay, longer than T should, sending you the following notice. I regret exceedingly having to announce to you the death of the Very Rev. Father Anthony Superior of this Retreat at 12.30 am on the g9th April 1904 just half an hour after the Feast of our Holy Founder St, Paul of the Cross. Hig death was the regult of lung disease from which he had been suffering for a considerable time, Father Anthony, known in the world as dom Henry Carroll, was born in Ratimines Parish, publin on nd September 1845, In his 22nd year he entered our Novitiate, Broadway, Worcestershire, and having given the necessary proofs of a religious vocation he made his profession on the 19th tay 1867, He was then transferred to §t. Pauls etreat, Mount Argus, Dublin where he pursued his pliilosephical and theolegiaeal studies, Tumediate- ly after lils ordination he was appointed by the Provincial to this Retreate In the discharge of his many laborious snd trying duties, in the Infirmeries Insti tutdon$and Parish he displayed singular geal and devotedness, on account of which the parishioners one and all evinced the greatest possible regard and reverenoe for the young priessat. Th is indeed a remarkable coincidence that in the very place he commenced his spiritual labours 52 years azo 1t was God's Holy Will he should close his iissionary lite and earthly carcer, After workinz most piously and zealously ror a considerable time in St. Mungo's Parish the Provinetal knowing well his great energy, weligious spirit, prudence and anxiety to take part in the great work of lilssions, transferred him to 9t. Annes retreat, Sutton, where Father anthony prepared himself for Missionary work by Fervent prayer and almost uninterrupted stady of the Holy | Seriptures and Fathers of the Church, As a result of this which wag ‘always his practi@e, he was recognised and aclmowledzad not only by his prethafn, but by the secular Clorzy and people wherever he preached as ene of the most: fervent and successful Missioners in the Anglo Hibernian Province/
