Fr. ARTHUR Devine (1849-1919) Father Arthur (Devine) of Saint Paul of the Cross. = _ . 7 On Easter Sunday April 20th 1919, Father Arthur died at St. Paul's Retreat, 2 Mount Argus, Dublin. ‘The end was not unexpexted as he had been serioualy. 431 for — ome time. His name in the world was Arthur Paul Devine, He was born at . Kilmactiege, Co. Sligo, on Iat Aeer. 1849, made hia profeusion at Broadway on — -Téth November 1866 and was ordained in J872. He occupied the office of Superior of St. Mungo's Retreat, Glasgow from I879 - = Y8BI and was elected Provincial Consultor in 1884 which office he held for three years. For about forty years he fulfilled with distinction the duties of Lector _. - of Theology and was the authors of several works dealing with Mystical and Aacetical Theology, The Mass, The Blessed Euchariat, the Commandments and ; Sacraments, Religious Life and the Law of Christian Marriage. Some of these works | are atandard publications. He was a contributor to the Catholic Encyclopedia and | | several reviews, At times he gave missions and retreats and was alweys gealoug in attending the gonfessional and preaching the Word of God. While a member of the Highgate Community he inatructed and received into the Church a large number of converts. Frequently consulted in spirituel matters his decisions and advice were highly appreciated by the large numbers who placed themselves under hie direction. His mltifarious duties were never allowed by him to interfere with the Regular - Observance in which he gave an inspiring example. There was an admirable blending of the active and contemplative life in hie career as a Fassionist. He never spared himself when charity and the apiritual welfare of his neigh- eur needed his services. His humble, forbearing, pleasant manners endeared. | him to his brethron.
