i Fr. Athanasius Ryan Rev. Father Athatiasius Ryan, CP. A. cablegram received at- Mount Argus, Dublin, announces the death of a well-known Passionist “missionary, Rev. Varner ArTHA- wasius Ryan, C.P., at Adelaide, 8. Australia, at the age of 70. | : A native of Leighlin Bridge, Co. Carlow, ‘where he was born on May 18th, 1870, Father Athanasius of the Mother of God joined the Passionist Order in 1889, and after his pro- fession began his ecclesiastical studies at Mount. Argus. -He finished them at St, Joseph’s Retreat, Highgate, London, where he was ‘ordained priest by the late Cardixial Vaughan. . . Subsequently he became a member. of Mount Argus Community, and for ten years _ was actively engaged in the work of giving '- with prudence and judgment. missions and retreats throughout Ireland and England. Yor three years he held the office of Rector at Harborne, Birmingham, and in 1908 he was appointed Pro-Provincial of. the Order in Australia, an office which he filled On the expira- tion of his’ term of office he was elected Provincial Consultor. For more than thirty years Fr. Athanasius laboured with untiring zeal ih the Australian mission field, during which he nobly. upheld the traditions of his Order as a preacher. and spiritual director. be- keenly felt, not only by his ‘religious brethren .and relatives, but by thousands \who came under the sphere of his ‘spiritual influence.
