Fr. Benedict Abel (1871-1932) The death of Fr. Benedict Abel, C.P., at Goulbourn, New South Wales, will be keenly felt by all who knew him. Known in the world as Victor Abel, he was born 2 October 1871 at Hobart, Tasmania, and was a school teacher before he became a Passionist. Having entered the novitiate at Goulbourn, he was professed 16 May 1893, and at the conclusion of his ecclesiastical studies, was raised to the priesthood in 1899. He spent the early years of his priestly life in Sydney, and for a term was superior of St. Brigid's Retreat, Marrickville. .For more than 18 years he laboured zealously in Adelaide, Sth. Australia, returning later to the Retreat at Goulbourn. It was soon realised that he was attacked by a fatal disease, that his earthly days were numbered. His resignation and patience were truly exemplary as he passed the last few months of his life awaiting the summons of the Master. As a priest, Fr. Benedict was remarkable for his kindness and unwearied patience in the con- fessional, and for his assiduous attention to the sick and the dying. His attractive disposition made him beloved by all with whom he came in contact, and his passing will be mourned by all. R.I.P. (From "The Cross" July 1932)
