Br. Benignus McGettigan (1837-1898) fg Brother Benismus (licGettigan) of the Immaculate Conception. Br. Benignus of the Immaculate Conception, in the world John MicGettigan, was born on January 22nd 1837, at Nevagh in the Diocese of Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland. He was clothed with the Religious Habit December I7th 1869, professed Dec. 18th 1870. This good Brother, whose exemplary life and sweet, kindly disposition, brought on his shoulders the onerous task of questing, filled this office sometime for Broadway, and then for Harborne during tne greatest part of his Religious life. This, however, did# not prement him from being most industrious when he was at home, so that even when his two serious attacks of illness rendered him unfit for the quest, he was always busy about those things that happened to be under his charge. He.was in fact in every sense of the word an exemplary Religious, whilst his cheerful and aimiable disposition, and innocent, edifying life made everybody love him, and think well of the Order which he so well represented before the world. His serious attack of kidney and heart desease which first threatened his life occured at Broadway for which retreat he then collected. His second occured at Harborne something about a year and a half since. These two attacks so far under- mined his health, that when finally attacked by pluerisy he had to succumb to it in little more than a week. During his illness he was most patient and resigned. He received the Last Sacraments on Friday August [9th and calmly expired surrounded by those of his brethern who were at home, at about 43 p.m. on Sunday the 2Ist. On Monday he was taken to the church where in the evening.the Office of the Dead was said round the coffin, at which many of the congregation assisted. He was interred on Tuesday, with Sblemn High Mass and the usual rites in our own little cemetery, Many letters have been received fro benefactors expressing regret at the death of Brother Benignus, and their sympathy with the Order at the loss of this exemplary and aimiable Brother. tated August 43Ist 1898 and sismed "Pidelis, C.F."
