Br. Columban Holt (1907-1996) St. Anne and Bl Dominic Monastery Lane, Sutton, St. Helens, A Merseyside WA9 35P Pasatonists Yel: (0744) 811935 Fax: (01744) 820557 BROTHER COLUMBAN OF THE THORN-CROWNED HEAD Columban Holt was a native of Burnley and though born into a non-Catholic family, he was received into the Church as a young man and entered the Novitiate at Broadway in the summer of 1934 as a brother postulant. That was a time when brothers had to do six months postulancy before being clothed and remain in the noviceship for six months after Profession. He was professed in December 1935 and for most of his life he was engaged in the unglamorous but essential work of keeping the Community fed and the Monastery cleaned. He spent his early years as a professed Brother with the class of students in Sutton where his sense of fun and his anecdotes about work in the mill in Burnley became a staple recreation. Columban is one of the people of whom there is nothing startling to say but, like the unseen foundations of any building, he was essential to the well-being of the community. He became skilled with the needle and was often occupied in making habits for brethren and doing a variety of other jobs to keep the wheels turning. He had a great devotion to Our Blessed Lady and went to Lourdes almost every year as part of his holiday. As he grew older and more infirm he was admitted to Park House Nursing Home in Liverpool where he edified Sisters and staff by his patience and it was from there on Christmas Eve 1996 he went to spend his first Christmas in Heaven. May his good soul rest in peace. Liverpool B.C. Archdlocesan Trustees Inc. Registered Charity No. 232709
