Tm BY the death of Father Columban of the Imma- culate Conception, which occurred at St. Paul’s Retreat, Mount Argus, Dublin, on Saturday, December zoth, at the age of ecighty-three, the Province of St. Patrick has lost one of its most venerable figures. , ’ Born at Gortnahoe, “Co. Tipperary; on March — 18th, 1865, Michael Tyne gave early indications of initiative and. entetprise by starting life as a journalist, He was still a junior reporter for the provincial press when he felt the call to higher thiugs and résolved to dedicate his life to God’s service. At the age of twenty-four, he entered the Passionist :Novitiate, St. Saviour’s, Broadway, Worcs, where he was professed on December 8th, 1890. Five years later he was raised to the priest- hood by Mgr. Graham, Co-adjutot Bishop of Plymouth. . In 1945, Fr. Columban had the happiness of celebrating his Golden Jubilce. QHORTLY after ordination, Fr. Columban was ‘attached to the Passicnist Church, Avenue Hoche, Paris. Here he remained until 1902, when the community was: expelled by the anti-clerical legislation, of the French Geverninent. In a fare- well address to a weeping congregation, he declared that ‘although tyranny might bréak earthly ties, the golden chain of love no huinan power could sever.’ Subsequently he ministered for some years at Harborne, Birmingham, but the greater pavt of his religious life was spent at St. Paul's Retreat, Mount Argus. Fr. Columban was well acquainted with the Servant of God, Father Charles, aid gave valuable. evidence in the Beatification Process. Indeed he frequently recalled his memories of Father Charles, for whose holiness and virtue he had a profound and life-long veneration. Amongst his manifold interests, it is probable that the apostolate of the press held the first place in his affections. For some years he was con- nected with the New Eva, an important. Catholic publication that was highly successfiil during its brief life. From 1918-1922 he, was Editor of THE CRdss, and guided- its destinies during the _ difficult, post-war period of the ‘ troubled times’ itt Ireland. He was most assiduous in preparing reports for the metropolitan journals; obituaries, funerals, processions, jubilees‘ were chronicled by his ready pen. He was not a little proud too of his flowing script, with its clear, bold legible characters. Keenly interested in broadcasting, he never failed to secure a place beside the radio when a teligiois topic was on the air. tliat eee ene eres Fr. Columban Tyne (1865-1947) ‘The late Fr. Columban, ¢.P. BEING an exceptionally gifted preacher, Fr.. -® Columban won widespread recognition as an outstanding missioner. Even in old age, his voice was clear atid resonant, and if the fire of youth was thete no longer, his carefully prepared discourses and well-rounded sentences showed the practised hand of the polished preacher. His prudence and long experiencé made him a much-sought con- fessor: he showed himself ready and willing to assist all who approached him. To the poor he was ever frind-hearted and charitable; he never left the monastery without bringinga small supply of coppers, which he placed in an easily-accessible pocket to be bestowed as alins. He excelled as a conversationalist, for his memory was amazingly accurate, atid his recollection of past events both vivid and detailed. His witty conments on current events were often quoted with: gusto in the com- munity, * A couple of years ago he suffered an attack of partial paralysis, which affected his right arm. He fought bravely against this disability, from which he never fully recovered. His last illness was brief, lasting barely a week. Fortified by the Sacraments of the Church, he peacefully breathed his last just a few days before Christmas. His passing at a ripe old age breaks another link with the past, arid temoves from our tidsta venerable and beloved figure. May he rest in peace. ‘ oan 4
