Fr. Daniel Nugent (1836-1902) eg Father Daniel (Nugent) of =the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Wary. At 8 otclock on Thursday morning the 24th April I902, Fr. Daniel of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Wary (known in the world as Patrick Nugent) a menber of this community passed away to another world. lie was born in Kildress, Co. Tyrone, Ireland on February IAth 1836 and was educated in the Armagh Seminary where he went through his course of studies with marked distinction and success. He entered our Congregation in December 1860, and six fears later was ordained priest by the late Bishop O'Reilly of Liverpool. Being a mah of untiring zeal and energy, he was appointed to the missionary staff and for 30 years was _ principally employed in giving missions and retreats. The years during which . Fr. Daniel was employed in giving missions was ak time when missions were regarded as a novelty in most places and missioners were few in the Congregation. From this can be easily understood the great amount of work done in the vineyard of the Lord by this faithful son of St. Paul of the Cross and the constant strain mental and physical that was enduréd and endured willingly, for the sake of souls. .It was this heavy work of the missions, according to medical testimony, that caused the heart disease of which he died. _ Having filled several important positions of trust in the Congregation, and being’ no longer able for severe active work by reason of advancing years, he was appointed member of this community in 1896 where by his interest in the work appointed him, his zeal in attending to the confessional. and his earnest and striking discourses, he was stamped with the character of a truly worthy priest — and a devoted son of the congregation. Priests and people alike regarded him as . aman of very strang character and possessing a striking personality; as one who feared nothing human and who. would face any danger when the honour of the priest+ hood or the salvation of souls were at stake. This indomitable courage was the result of- his great faith and confidence in the all-powerful grace of God. About a year and a half before his death such was Fr. Daniel's condition that it was thought necessary to call in the doctor who pronounced him unfit for further active service on account of the serious state of his heart, From that time on he began visibly to decline, though throughout all his illness he was ‘patient and cheerful, perfectly resigned to God's Holy Will when it was announced to him that there was no hope of recovery. From time to time ie iad to endure gevere spasms. of .the heart and during the last fortnight of his life they were very frequent. -On the morning of his death he seemed in excellent spirits and — with the beads in his hand he was about to say his Rosary when he was seized by & the last attack in which he died fortified by the rites of Holy Church. The funeral obsequies took place on Saturday the 26th April at which the bishop of the diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Tlenry, presided.- Signed "John itary, C.F., Rector" Ardoyne, Beliast. eee em me ete alert me mnt reel mene ee en ne er te ne re mee ne ie et nee mint
