Fr. Francis McCaffrey (1911-1996) FR. FRANCIS OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL SUCCOUR (McCaffrey) Fr. Francis was born in Belfast on March 29th 1911 and after his schooldays entered an architect’s office to learn skill that was to be very useful later on. At the age of 26 he entered the Novitiate and was professed at Broadway on Christmas Eve 1938. He joined the group of students at Sutton for eighteen months and then was moved with his class to St. Non’s Retreat in St. David’s. It was while he was there that his ability came to the fore and he prepared the plan for the extension of that house which were eventually put into execution. Francis was ordained at Sutton on May 10th 1943 and his first appointment was to the Juniorate at Blythe Hall. As the years passed he was Superior of several of our retreats and he was always a very devoted priest and excelled in visiting the parishes of which he was in charge especially in Broadway as well as Carmarthen and Herne Bay. In the last years of his life as his health began to fail, he was admitted to the Nursing Home for retired priest’s at Ince Blundell and he died there on May 6th 1996. His Requiem took place at Sutton and he lies amongst his brethren in the new part of the cemetery reserved for the community. May his good soul rest in peace.
