The deeth vecurred in 2 nursing-home at Manchester | | on Tuesday, January tith., 1955, of Father George Dobson, G.P. | He was 77. ~The cause of death was officially described as cerebral thrombosis. For some months, Fether George's ~ 0 oss p¥sical and mental powers hed been waning, and it was felt necessary, 29 few weeks before Christmas, to remove him to the - Providence Huspitel, St. Helens. There was, however, very Little. that could be done for him in the way of treatment, end he wis transferred to the care cf the Alexian Brothers at Menchester, At the beginning of Janusry, just as the annusl retreat at St. Anne's was about to commence, word was received that Father George's condition had worsened con- siderably. Father Rector went to Manchester and was with last day on earth was 9» hard one - he suffered much during the | Course of the day, but in the end died peacefully. His bcdy w2s brought back to Sutton on Jenusry 13th., and the funerel took place the following day. His Grease, the Archbishop of Liverpool, who had been - friend of Father George for some’ years, was personelly represented sat the Mass. John Joseph, Dobson was born in Liverpool on June 9th., 1877. : He attended St. Francis Xavier's School = one of his contemporaries was the future Fother Raymund, who j was also to be » Passionist snd whose death was to precede .that j of Father Georze by only e month. In 1895, Father George went to the Noviviate at Broadway, being professed there on May 18th., 15%6. He completed his studies at St. Anne's Retreat, Sutton, where he was ordained priest on the feast of Our Lady's Nativity, 1901. During the course of his 3 priestly life he wss chosen for various offices in the Con- a“ gregation, He was /ice-Rector at Carmarthen, Sutton and Broadway. He was also elected Rector of Brordway, and in 19:1 became Master of Novices. In 1944 he returned to Sutton | where he spent the lest 10 years of his life. In 1951, he had the hap ,iness of celebrating the golden jubilee of his priesthood. Though unwell snd unable to say Mass himself, — he attended * Sulemn High Maus sung bv the Father Rector. Later that year. he wes taken to hospital and underwent a very serious operation from which he made » remerkable rec- avery. : Father George was 2 man of simple tastes and

- 2 « habits. He was a loyal member cf the Comgregeticn of the Pession ~ he was keeping the ful}. observance up to a com~ peratively shcrt time before his death. He made the most of his talents and was very popular as + retrest-master. The fact that he was entrusted with retreats to such enclosed Orders as the Carmelite nuns reveals the confidence that his “superiors placed in him. He was very popular as a confessor, particularly with his own brethren. He had always a tendency to secrupulosity. and this tendency became very much mcre marked in the latter years of his life, and was-a source of much suffering for him. He suffered = good deal from stomach-trouble and sleep did not come easily to him, It was, nevertheless, admirable to see his devotion to the night~office, from which he was absent on singularly few occasions. He was esteemed and respected by the faithful with whom he came in contact, The parishioners of St. Anne's, Sutton, particularly had a zreat effection fer him. By his deoth, the Congregation has lost one cf its most loyel suns, and we may confidenkiy expect that Our Lord will zive him the reward cf his labours and perseverance. : May he rest in peace,
