Fr. Jarleth Killian (1901-1948) Reve Father JSarlath OGePs A deepty mourned and much leved priest of our Community of Holy Cross Rétreat, Belfast, passed to his reward when Reve Father Jarlath (Killian) of the Mother of Serrows, fortified with the holy Sacraments died on April 23rd. 1948, after years of suffering from tuberculostse We was born en May lst. 1901, in Mehambee, Athlone. Having passed through the primary classes of the local National School, he studied fer a few years at the Cistercian College, Rescréas After a shert peried in our Preparatery College, Sandymount, Dublin, he entered our Novitiate at Saint Gabriel's Reétreat, Enniskillen, where he was prefessed on September Shst,. 1919s Continuing his studies for the priesthood in St. Annots Retreat, Subten, he was ordained theré on Septamber 18th. 1926.4 Shortly after his Ordination, he returned to St. Gabriel's Retreat, where he rémained for about a year, when hé was appointed te St. Mungo! s Retreat, Glasgews | Here, while helping in various parechial duties he acted as Chaplain te theyvery large Royal Infirmary. His devotion to the sick, and his unfailing tourtesy won §$é wnatinted praise from the Fretestant authorities of the Infirmary But his health did not stand the strain and hé was- stricken with a severe fliness, peritonitis supervening.s At the time there seemed lithie heps of his receverys But Ged erdained otherwisés That his health might be restered it was judged advisable by his superiors that. he should be ‘transferred te Holy Cross Retreats Fer somé years he was éngaged on Missions, Gifted with a clear $$$ mistcal, and sympathetic voice, his sermons teuched the hearts of his hearers, especially when he preached on the Sacred Passion, or the Serrews of Our Ladys And he was mach sought aff‘er in the Conféssitonal because of his sympathy and é¢ncouragement for the erring. Te thosé associated with him on various missions, and séeing his success, which he himself depreciate: depreciated, it was a source of deep regret. that his missionary eareer was cut so shert by his ¢arly break-down in health.

After the pegrem in Belfast in 1935, the new district, Glenard, rapidly developed, bringing many ef the persecuted Gathelics frem other parishes, where their homes had bean burned outs ‘Fr. Jarlath was asked to take ever the Glenard district, at that time, difficult, from vartous' causés: The strain told on his health - never rebust - and the first signs ef tuberculesis shewed, Fer the remaining years of his life he wah’ an invalid sometimes better, sometimes worsé,s Through his ups and dewns, he was & remarkably patient and cheerful, and his charity and ready wit made him a lovable companion te his brethren, Te those whe knew him intimately there was revealed a deep spirituality, with a tender leve for our Blessed Lady. Te offer Holy Mass, which he did as eftenm as possible, meant a big struggle against physical weaknesg after a night ef racking coughing o During the last few months ef his life he was no longep able, te his great ve regret, and he was deeply grateful te these ef his brethren whe effered Mass for him, As his end approached on the evening of April 23rd., he was helped by Father Rector and his brethren reciting the prayers for the dying, and received his last absolution from his confessor and faithful friend, Father Bede, Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lerd$ and let perpetual light shine upon hime May he rest in peace. | Bonaventure of the Five Wounds.
