Br. Kevin Kavanagh (1841-1924) | oto Brother Kevin (Kavanagh) of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The death of Brother Kevin has removed from our midst one whose single- minded devotedness to the Congregation may not be written in a necessarily brief obituary notice. Porn at Dun-Laoghaire [6th May I89I, Bro, tevin became a professed mémher of the Congregation. 6th August 1867. Thus at his death he had almost completed his 83rd year of life, and his 57th yeer as a Passionist. During © this long period of religious. life, he fulfilled with scrupulous exactitude the several offices to which obedience called him. By nature gentle and unobtrusive his manifold alilities were eyer at the call of duty. However unpretentious the work at which he was engaged, he gave to it his whole-hearted service. Though ' the greater part of his religious life was passed at Broadway there are few retreats in which hig energies were not spent. But as General Infirmarien to the Province his memory will he revered by those who will pecall with pratitude his skill spent with unstinted charity upon our sick religious. Indead in this particular office he revealed himself a worthy son of our Holy Founder, whose anxious spirit over the sick he ever breathed, and whose Rule in relation to the care of the sick he observed in letter and in spirit. The spirit of Holy Charity shone forth woth pathetic insistance when stretched upon his own bed of death he seemed forgetful of his infirmities in his anxiety to be of service to those whom he had headd were unwell. 7 ‘ When asked what virtue might be written as the most pronounced in his simple life, one who had enjoyed Bro. Kevinhs friendship for over half a century, readily replied --- "his geentleness". It was this virtue which won for him the ardent affection of both old and young. In the most trying circumstances he was found unruffled, while his simple sally of humour was at times as oil to troubled, waters. His devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. was deep and abiding. — fo this, the special. devotion of his life may well be ascribed his meekness and humility. The burden of years and increasing infirmity brought into still bolder relief his rentleness. The injunction of the Holy Spirit seemed to have found its realisation in his humblo life - "My son keep thy soul in meekness dand give it honour according to its deserts" (Beclus. 10/31). During his last illness borne with edifying resignation, he received the Last Sacraments and daily ministrations from Fr. Bebedict, and was nursed with tender affection by priests, students and brothers During his last hour he was surrounded by the Rector and community of $ Saviour's, and amidst their prayers he calmly breathed his soul. to God.
