Fr. Pius Carolan (1894-1930) OBITUARY NOTICE OF Fr. PIUS OF ST. GABRIEL, C.P. It has been said by a spititual writer that "Death is the end of the beginning". This thought occurred to many when the death of Fr. Plus of St. Gabriel, was announced on Friday, the 7th of March. | Born in Bailiboro, Co, Cavan on July 14th, 1894, he was known as Thoras Carolan. While yet young hig parents came to Belfast, and lived in the Parish of Ardoyne. He made Hie elementary studies at Ardoyne Boye' Sehool. Having finished his studies, he entered the Civil Services, and resided in London. But feeling called to be a member of our Congregation, at the age of 19, he made persofal application to the then Fr. Provineial et St. Joseph's Highgate, and was accepted. He was professed on November 2nd, 1914. His student years waite spent partly at Mount Argus, Dublin, and at 5t. Anne's, Sutton, Lanéashire, where he was ordained priest in 1920, #&x years after his profession by the late Most Rev. Dr. Whiteside, Arohbishop of Liverpool. Gifted much above the ordinary individual, and with a happy favility of imparting his knowledge he wae appointed Professor to a '@lase of students, bringing them successfully through their Philosoph: and Theology. Of great energy he employed every spare moment in sermom Writing. His name soon bacame know n throughout the Arehdiocese of Liverpoal, as an able preacher and lecturer. Later he was requested by the "Catholic Evidence Guild" to place his ‘services at their disposal, and he was probably the ablest and most facile exponent of Catholic Dogma in the north of England. Such ungeaseing work was bound to undermine the strongest constitution and certainly in one like Fr. Pius who was none too
robuet, démanded its toll, On the division of the Anglo-Hibernian Provinee he chose the Province of St. Patrick, and was appointed a member of the Cummunity in St. Gabriel's Retreat, Enniskillen, He devoted himself to Missions and Retreats for sometime, but it became evident that his health was permanently impaired, For the past twelve months he wae constantly under the eare of Medical Doctore and Spesialists, but their science was wiavalling. In the hope that a change would benefit him, he became a member of the Holy Cross Ardoyne,Cummunity., It was soon apparent, however, that his health was getting weaker, and for, medical advice he returned to Dublin and died ren, faron on the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinkas of whom he was such a devoted disciple and admirer. Fr. Piue had an extraordinary devotion to the Holy Mass. It was his sonstant theme in the pulpit and among hie brethern, snd he made no seoréet of his desire and ambition to publish a volume on the Holy Bucharist ab # Sacrament and as a Sacrifice. But God ordained thet 1% was not to be.se there is left only the memory of his spoken word. The obsequies took plage in Mount Argue on Mareh the 1Oth. R. Is Pe Lhenen $4. froxpr [C tetw
