Fr. Vincent Grotti (1820-1883) Se eee eee ee PATHER VINCENT GROTTI Father Vincent of St.Joseph (Grotti) was born in Italy in 1290. A seculer priest and Canon of Viterbo, he entered our Novitiate in 1°45 and was professed in 1846. He came to England in 1847 and worked here for 17 years. With Ven.Father Dominic and Father Ignatius (Spencer) he gave the first Passionist Mission in Ireland at St.Audeon's, High Street, Dublin, in 1°49. He was appointed SUBsrion at Woodchester on the death of “ather Marcellinus (Pini) in 1347 He received possession of Broadway from the Benedictines on th September, 1°50, and was appointed its first Hector in _that year. It was he who accepted Father Paul Mary (Packenhan into the Novitiate in 185%. In 1954, when the General post- poned the Provincial Chapter sine die, he was sypointed Vice- Provincial of the English Retreats. It fell to his lot to give up both Aston Hall and Cotton Hall during «ais Vice- pro- vincid@date. In 1856 he established the first Ktrest in Ireland at Mount Argus and laid the foundation stdne of the temporary chapel there in September 1856. At the General Chapter of 1857 he was elected Provincial of St.Jose -h's Province, but refused to accept and so was elected First Provincial Consultor to Father Ignatius (Peoli) Father Vincent was 'a man of outstanding personality... impulsive almost to tactlessness" (Fr,Herbert) The strained relations with Mr,Leigh at Woodcester mey have been partly due to Father Vincent's temperament. However he was much sought after in Irelend and often asked by Bishops to give the retreats to the secnlar clergy. He returned to Rome in 1833 and soon after was elected Procurator General. ie died in Italy in 1833.
